Is this BISP SMS real? How to spot a fake 8171 message

A BISP message is real only if the sender is 8171 itself. A “BISP” or “8171” message from any other number, such as a mobile number starting 03, is fake, and so is any message asking for money, because all BISP services are free.

The one rule

8171 is the only official BISP number. A message from any other number is fake.Source: bisp.gov.pk (Press Release No. 20, 10 Mar 2026)Checked on:

Signs of a fake message

  • The sender is not 8171 but an ordinary mobile number.
  • Words like “your payment is on hold, send a processing fee”, and a request to send money by Easypaisa or JazzCash.
  • A prize or a big amount: “Congratulations! Your name came up in the lucky draw.”
  • A link that does not end in .gov.pk.
  • A request to contact a WhatsApp “agent”, or to share a code or PIN sent to your phone.
  • Pressure such as “today is the last day”.

  2. Report the fake number or link to PTA’s complaint system, on 0800-55055 or the PTA CMS app.Source: pta.gov.pk (Advisory on deceptive links and official platforms, 22 Dec 2023)Checked on:

To see the warning signs in a message, paste it into our “Real or fake?” checker. It runs only on your phone and never calls a message “real”, because only BISP can say that.
